HomeAdvisor publishes $200 to $1,500 for most leak repairs nationally. American Standard, a manufacturer, publishes $1,200 to $3,000 plus for what sounds like the same job. Both are honest, and the gap between them is the whole story: where the leak is decides the bill. A weeping fitting isn’t the same repair as an evaporator coil buried in your air handler.
What sets the AC refrigerant leak repair cost?
Location, not refrigerant. Access, the failed component, recovery, testing and the recharge all ride on where the leak turns out to be.
HomeAdvisor publishes a national leak repair range of $200 to $1,500. American Standard publishes $1,200 to $3,000 plus for the same broad category, and its summary line puts leak repair at $1,000 and up. Those aren’t competing numbers. They’re describing different repair scopes, and neither one is a Tampa Bay quote.
Trane’s national repair table shows the spread better than any range does. It lists expansion valve work at $100 to $700, condenser coil replacement at $1,000 to $4,000 plus, and evaporator coil replacement at $1,000 to $5,000 plus. Same leak, same refrigerant, and a completely different bill depending on what it’s leaking out of. Trane calls these ballpark estimates and tells you to call a local pro for real numbers, which is fair, because layouts and scopes aren’t uniform.
So the useful question isn’t what a leak costs. It’s where the leak is:
- An accessible fitting is usually the smallest scope.
- A valve or an exposed refrigerant line means recovery and brazing.
- A leaking coil usually means replacing the whole component.
- A buried line set means access work before anyone gets to the leak.
Get the location in writing before you get a price. A good estimate separates the component work from the refrigerant, the testing and the recovery, so you can see what you’re actually paying for.
There’s one more thing in Trane’s table worth sitting with. It prices thirteen components and leaves exactly one row blank: refrigerant recharge, where it just says the cost varies by refrigerant type. The manufacturer with the most reason to publish a number won’t publish one. That tells you how much the diagnosis matters before anybody quotes you.
How much does an AC refrigerant recharge cost?
HomeAdvisor publishes $200 to $500 for a professional recharge nationally, with leak testing at $50 to $100 and refrigerant recovery fees at $50 to $300.
It also publishes per-pound averages of $12 to $80 depending on type. R-22 lands at $50 to $80 per pound, R-410A at $12 to $25 per pound, and R-454B, used in systems built in 2025 or later, at about $80 per pound. Don’t multiply those against your system’s charge and call it an estimate. HomeAdvisor’s own recharge range already folds in variables that arithmetic won’t catch.
Here’s the part that matters more than any of those numbers. A recharge puts the refrigerant back. It doesn’t close the hole it went out of.

Why does a small leak still cost real labor?
Because the sealed system has to come apart either way, and the part price is rarely the expensive half.
American Standard puts it this way: most small leaks are repairable, and the fix might be as simple as replacing a valve or brazing a refrigerant line. But even the easy repairs require pulling all the refrigerant out first, then pulling a vacuum on the lines before anything goes back in.
That’s why a cheap component doesn’t buy you a cheap repair. You’re paying for work on the whole refrigerant circuit, not for a part.
Which of our own price ranges applies to a leak?
Both of them do, and they’re describing the two ends of the same job. It’s worth showing you why they differ instead of leaving you to guess.
Our AC repair service page prices most repairs at $150 to $650 for parts and labor after the diagnostic, with the diagnostic itself at $89 to $150, and it says refrigerant leak repairs and motor replacements run higher. Several of our city pages, including Clearwater, list refrigerant leaks inside that same $150 to $650 band.
Both are true, and the fork is access. A leak at a reachable fitting or a service valve is the case the city pages are describing. A leak in a coil or a buried line set is what the service page means by “run higher,” and it’s also where the national manufacturer ranges start climbing. What we won’t do is split the difference and hand you a Tampa number for a job nobody has looked at yet.

Does federal law require you to repair an AC leak?
No. The federal appliance leak repair rule doesn’t reach a typical home system, and most pages that quote it at homeowners get that backwards. Two other federal rules do apply, and they’re the ones that shape your options.
Start with the rule people cite. Since April 10, 2020, 40 CFR 82.157 applies only to appliances holding a full charge of 50 or more pounds of a class I or class II refrigerant. The same paragraph says its requirements don’t apply at all to appliances containing solely substitute refrigerants.
Your system is outside that on both counts. The definitions in 40 CFR 82.152 treat R-410A and R-454B as substitutes, not as class I or class II ozone-depleting substances, and HomeAdvisor says most residential systems hold six to 12 pounds. Wrong refrigerant class, wrong charge size, twice outside the rule.
That isn’t a loophole and it isn’t permission. The venting prohibition at 40 CFR 82.154(a)(1) sits in a different section, and it says no person maintaining, servicing, repairing or disposing of an appliance may knowingly vent or release refrigerant into the environment. So no rule orders you to fix the leak, and your technician still can’t legally let what’s in there go.
The often-quoted 10 percent leak rate needs the same correction. Under 40 CFR 82.157 that figure applies to comfort cooling appliances holding 50 or more pounds. It was never a residential threshold.
Can a homeowner just buy R-410A?
No, and the reason is a sales rule rather than a licensing one.
Since January 1, 2018, 40 CFR 82.154(c)(1) has barred selling a non-exempt substitute refrigerant unless the buyer holds technician certification or employs somebody who does. HomeAdvisor says the same thing in plain English: EPA limits refrigerant sales to certified pros, so a recharge needs a licensed HVAC technician. The small automotive cans you can buy off a shelf sit under a separate exception written for containers of two pounds or less, which is why those exist and a jug of R-410A for your house doesn’t.
Florida’s licensing rules are a second, separate requirement, and they cover the repair work itself rather than the refrigerant.
Is an older R-410A system stranded?
No. An existing R-410A system isn’t cut off by the 2025 refrigerant transition, and the EPA’s own table is where that shows up.
The AIM Act technology transition restriction took effect January 1, 2025 and sets a 700 GWP limit on residential air conditioning and heat pump systems. The EPA’s restricted systems table then notes there’s no installation compliance date for systems where all the specified components were manufactured or imported before that date.

Why do Tampa Bay systems spring leaks?
Two local reasons, and neither one is a statistic we’d make up.
The first is runtime. Tampa Bay runs cooling roughly nine months a year, sometimes closer to year-round, so a slow leak gets months of operating time to bleed a system down before anyone notices.
The second is salt. Salt air speeds up corrosion on both the indoor coil and the outdoor condenser, and homes around South Tampa, St. Pete Beach and the barrier islands sit in it year-round. Our guide to salt air and coastal AC systems covers what that does to equipment.
Both are arguments for catching it early. Regular HVAC maintenance and an AC tune-up are where a charge that’s drifting low gets noticed before July does the noticing for you.
Does a refrigerant leak repair need a permit?
That depends on the scope and the jurisdiction, and the licensed contractor doing the work is the one who confirms it.
Florida Building Code section 105.2 exempts replacement of a part that doesn’t alter its approval or make it unsafe, and the same section says exempt work still has to meet code. A sealed system refrigerant repair isn’t that simple part swap. It can mean recovery, brazing, evacuation and replacing a component.
Unincorporated Hillsborough County’s non-structural exemption specifically excludes mechanical work, and its mechanical no-permit list carries the same narrow part-replacement language. For a project that needs only a mechanical permit, the county requires a Notice of Commencement at $15,000 or more, which is a threshold worth knowing rather than one that decides any particular repair. Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Pasco are separate permitting authorities with their own rules.

Should you repair the leak or replace the system?
Compare the diagnosed component against the full scope of the repair, not against a range you found online. A fitting is a different decision than a coil.
Ask for four things in writing: the leak location, the failed component, the refrigerant type, and whether recovery and recharging are in the price.
